In this study, the effects of an acute 100 m free style competition following a winter training programme, on antioxidant and lipid peroxidation parameters in 11-13 years old adolescent swimmers (10 boys and 9 girls) were investigated. Data were analyzed by using the Mann- Whitney U and Willcoxon tests. Serum catalase, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase enzyme activities were found to be significantly higher following the competition results (p<0.01). A statistically significant decline in glutathione (GSH) levels (p<0.05) and an increase in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities (p<0.01) were also observed in the female gender, following the competition. Thus, winter swimming training for competition had different effects on adolescent swimmers of both genders. It can be concluded that adolescent swimmers preserved their oxidant and antioxidant status in balance following the 100 m free style competition following the training period.
